Swan Lake is a ballet by Pyotr Tchaikovsky composed in 1875-76 and despite its initial failure, it is now one of the most popular of all ballets. The story comes from a Russian folk tale, and tells of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by a curse. Premiered at the Bolshoy Theater in Moscow.
In 1871, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote a one-act children's ballet The Lake of Swans for his relatives. Six years after that, in 1877, the legendary ballet Swan Lake premiered at the Bolshoy Theater in Moscow. Today, the work is considered to be the standard of high art and the crown jewel of Russian ballet theater.
