Joseph Brodsky (1940 – 1996) was one of the greatest Russian poets of the 20th century. During his short life, he wrote incredible works of poetry that paved the way for the long poem genre. In the tradition of classic Russian writers like Pushkin and Lermontov, Brodsky expanded his creative reach, writing two plays and dozens of essays, most of which were written in English. In 1987, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
