History of Khokhloma Painting – Khokhloma Wood Painting first appeared in the second half of the 17th century in today's Koverninsky District of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. The handcraft was named after a trade settlement Khokhloma in the same area, where craftsmen had been known for making and selling their handmade goods between the 18th and 20th centuries. The art styles and the bright colors make Khokhloma art look so distinctly Russian.
The creation of Khokhloma is a hard and long process. By using tin, extreme heat and lacquer, artists were able to create the appearance of a gilded gold finish – they apply a silver-tin powder on a product before their trip to the kiln, so that the product gets a honey-golden color. Each piece is hand decorated with heat-resistant mineral paints. After the painting is done, the piece gets a generous coating of lacquer.
Design – Khokhloma is a national Russian ornament that is known for its vivid flower, berry and leaf patterns. Colors of Khokhloma are typically red and black over the gold.
Uniqueness – Handmade and hand-painted. All products are slightly different from each other as they are hand-crafted, which guarantees their unique and special look.
If you are looking for a memorable gift, we believe this is a good choice for you! Khokhloma is a traditional Russian souvenir.
