The hammer and sickle is a sign that relates to the main Soviet state emblem, it is an original Russian symbol. It also represents the unity of the urban industrial workers and the rural agricultural workers as the working class. The government set the hammer and sickle as a state emblem in the end of March – beginning of April 1918 and it was approved by the V Congress of Soviets in July 10, 1918. In July 26, 1918 it was depicted on the state seal of the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR. Prior to this emblem the hammer and plow was used.
