Chagall.I and the Village Nesting Doll

This nesting doll was inspired by the works of the legendary artist Marc Chagall. The strange similarity between man and beast is accentuated by the opposition of red and green colors. The profile of a man on the right with translucent eyes, staring into the distance – is a kind of self-portrait of the artist. In the background, a woman – the symbol of fertility – seems to be running away from a peasant wielding a scythe, perhaps as an omen of death. Behind them is a village with an array of colorful houses, some upside-down, which symbolizes Chagall’s native Vitebsk. On the bottom plain – the tree of life and the moon, overshadowing the sun.
